Running a Canine Semen Bank: Storage, Responsibility and Frozen Shipping for Breeders and Vets

A breeder who freezes a sire's semen is making a promise to a future litter that may be born twenty years from now. Whether that promise holds depends less on the freezing itself than on the vessel the straws live in, the person who checks it, and the way the straws travel when the time comes.

Why the demand keeps growing

Breeds with small gene pools bank proven males so their lines survive them. Frozen semen crosses borders far more easily than dogs do, with no quarantine and no stress for the animal. And health led programmes bank young, before hereditary conditions show, so the decision to use a sire can wait until his full health history is known.

Sizing the practice tank

Veterinary practices that offer freezing need a vessel with room to grow, because collections pile up and clients stay for years. Straws are stored on canes in sleeves or in goblets, grouped by client and by dog. Canister count matters for clean client separation, and the hold time that counts is the one for a tank opened every week, not the static figure on the data sheet.

Separating custody from ownership

The practice stores the straws; the breeder owns the genetics. A written storage agreement, a level check log, a low level alarm and an annual self audit turn a potential catastrophe into a manageable incident. Vacuum failures are usually slow and give days of warning, but only to teams logging levels. Cryogenic labels and identification rods matter too, because ordinary labels come off in liquid nitrogen.

Shipping frozen, not chilled

Chilled semen lasts days. Frozen semen in a charged dry shipper arrives with its storage life intact and meets carrier rules because there is no free liquid nitrogen on board. Charge fully, allow for delays, use a protective case, and send thawing instructions with the shipment.
