Satellite and Transport IVF: Planning Warm and Frozen Transfers Between Sites

Image
Running a fertility service across several sites changes the laboratory's job. Material and records arrive from satellite clinics and transport providers, and multi-site groups move frozen material between their own licensed laboratories. Each of those journeys needs the right equipment and a clear line of accountability. What the regulator expects Satellite and transport providers are not directly licensed by the HFEA, and licensable activities are not carried out on their premises. The Person Responsible at the primary licensed centre is accountable for services delivered through them. The HFEA must be told about every satellite and transport provider, each transport provider needs a third party agreement, and a breach by any of them is a breach of the primary centre's licence. Frozen embryos and gametes therefore sit at the licensed centre. Warm transfers into the laboratory Material carried from a transport provider is not frozen. It needs a steady 37 degrees C, protection ...

Should Your Laboratory Own a Dry Shipper or Hire One?

Dry shipper enquiries almost always arrive as a specification question. Which size, which hold time, which model. The prior question is whether you should own one at all, because a vessel used four times a year and a vessel used four times a month are different commercial decisions entirely. Start with what the vessel is A dry shipper holds liquid nitrogen absorbed into a porous inner matrix rather than as free liquid. Samples travel in the vapour phase, the vessel can be inverted without spilling, and there is no free liquid available to escape. That construction is why the shipper itself travels as not restricted under Special Provision A152 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, provided the packaging cannot build pressure or release nitrogen in any orientation and the air waybill carries the words not restricted together with the special provision number. Packing Instruction 650 of the same regulations governs the samples inside where those are classified as UN 3373 Category B. I...
