Four Controls That Make a Cryogenic Store Safe, and Why They Get Skipped
Liquid nitrogen tank safety is not complicated. It comes down to four controls, none of them expensive, all of them skipped somewhere every week.
One: ventilation and oxygen monitoring
Liquid nitrogen expands around 683 to 1 as it warms, a figure published in BCGA Code of Practice 30. A single 175 litre vessel therefore holds roughly 120 cubic metres of gas. Many cryo stores are smaller than that in total volume.
You need extract ventilation sized for every litre of liquid in the room, including delivery dewars that are only there temporarily. You need a fixed oxygen monitor. And the alarm light belongs on the outside of the door so it warns the person who has not yet entered.
HSE recommends workplace oxygen stays above 19.5 per cent. The University of St Andrews uses 19.5 per cent for urgent investigation and 18 per cent for immediate evacuation.
Two: keep the neck clear
A storage dewar is not a pressure vessel. The lid is a loose insulating plug and the neck vents to atmosphere. Moisture from the room can freeze in that neck, and CP30 sets out the consequence: an ice plug can form a seal that prevents the release of gas, leading to a rise in internal pressure, and ultimately a ruptured vessel.
Use only the stopper supplied with the vessel. Never fit a tighter one to keep the cold in. Check the neck visually every single time you open it.
Three: protective clothing that works
At around minus 196°C liquid nitrogen freezes skin on contact, and CP30 warns of severe damage to skin from contact with liquid or cold gaseous nitrogen. Aluminium canes lifted from a tank will stick to bare fingers.
Loose fitting insulated gloves matter specifically because they can be flicked off if liquid runs inside. A tight glove full of liquid nitrogen cannot be removed. Add a full face shield when decanting, not glasses, plus an apron and closed shoes.
Four: alarms and a tested response plan
ESHRE's 2026 good practice recommendations expect cryostorage tanks to be continuously monitored with alarms that detect and log out of range temperature or liquid nitrogen level. ASRM's 2020 cryostorage opinion recommends level probes in the liquid over temperature probes in the vapour, because level falls first.
A response plan needs to name a person for two in the morning and say where the backup vessel is. An alarm with nobody assigned to it is a noise.
The routine underneath all of it
Dip the level daily. Log every fill with date, vessel and litres. A tank that starts asking for nitrogen more often is telling you its vacuum is failing, weeks before a probe will.
