SpermScope vs Makler: What the Independent Study at Spermatology 2026 Actually Found

This week the XVth International Symposium on Spermatology is running at the University of Birmingham, 29 July to 2 August 2026. Dr Bryan Woodward BSc, MMedSci, PhD, FRCPath, Scientific Director of X&Y Fertility and Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, presented poster P32 comparing the SpermScope and Makler against UKNEQAS pre-validated sperm concentration target values.

Key results

Neither chamber accurate vs UKNEQAS targets (both p less than 0.05). No significant difference between chambers directly (p greater than 0.05). SpermScope R squared 0.77 vs Makler R squared 0.68 against UKNEQAS targets. 72.5 percent of samples within five million per millilitre difference between chambers.

Conclusion: The SpermScope could be used instead of the Makler and had a slightly higher correlation to validated target values.
