Why the Cheaper Cryogenic Vessel Is Often the More Expensive Decision


Two liquid nitrogen vessels, identical capacity, different price. It looks like a straightforward procurement choice. It rarely is, because capacity is the only specification the two quotations genuinely share and it is the one that matters least.

The recurring cost dwarfs the saving

A cryogenic vessel consumes liquid nitrogen continuously whether it is used or not. Static evaporation rate sets that baseline. Across a decade, the gap between a good rate and a poor one routinely exceeds the purchase price difference between the two vessels being compared.

Ask for two figures in writing on every quotation: the static evaporation rate, and what it means as a weekly nitrogen order at your capacity.

What you are paying for is inside the wall

The insulation is a vacuum. Better vessels have more layers of multilayer insulation, cleaner internal materials that outgas less, and a larger getter, the component that absorbs stray gas molecules and keeps the annulus evacuated. Getter capacity determines how many years the vessel holds its performance.

You cannot see any of it on delivery and it never appears on a comparison table. It costs money to build and it returns later as evaporation rate and service life.

Build quality shows up only when it fails

Neck construction, internal supports and weld quality decide whether a vessel survives being caught by a trolley. A knock can crack a weld without leaving a mark, after which the vacuum degrades quietly. A vessel built for a store room it never leaves is not the same as one moved between rooms weekly, and the cheaper quotation is often the first sold as the second.

Safety devices are part of the product

BCGA Code of Practice 36 requires at least two independent safety devices on the inner vessel of a pressurised tank, typically a pressure relief valve and a separate bursting disc, with the outer jacket relief device set to open at not more than 0.5 bar. A quotation that leaves that out is not cheaper, it is different.

Above 0.5 bar above atmospheric pressure, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 require a written scheme of examination drawn up by a competent person, with HSE guidance INDG178 setting out the scope. That recurring cost belongs in the comparison.

Monitoring, and the lines after the order

ESHRE's recommendations on good practice in the IVF laboratory, in Human Reproduction (41(8), 1245), expect cryostorage tanks to be continuously monitored with alarms that detect and log out of range temperature or LN2 level. If monitoring has been excluded to make a number look better, the installation is incomplete.

Then come the items nobody budgets: roller bases and trolleys, racks and canisters matched to your straw format, a dispensing dewar, a dipstick for the daily check, and cryogenic gloves, apron and face protection. Small individually, and collectively the reason a single line item budget runs short.
