Bulk, Cylinder or Self Collect: Choosing a Liquid Nitrogen Supply That Fits the Store You Actually Have

Laboratories rarely choose their nitrogen supply. They inherit it. The arrangement was set up when the first vessel arrived, deliveries kept coming, and nobody revisited it as the store grew.

It is worth revisiting, because supply mode and delivery frequency together decide a running cost you carry every week for as long as the samples are stored.

Bulk delivery

Bulk fills a static tank on site from a tanker. Lowest unit cost, least handling. It needs a permanent external installation, vehicle access, a concrete base, appropriate separation distances and a multi year agreement. Right for high, steady consumption.

Cylinder and portable vessel delivery

Pressurised vessels are supplied on exchange. Higher unit cost, no fixed installation, scales with the order. Most IVF laboratories and research units belong here.

Self collect

Taking your own dewar to a depot. Cheapest on paper, until staff time, vehicle arrangements and the transport risk assessment are counted. Suitable for small, infrequent requirements, not a clinical store.

The mode also decides how you decant. A pressurised supply feeds decanting directly. A self collect dewar has to be poured or pumped, which is why non pressurised dispensing vessels exist: a manual pump moves liquid without any gas pressure to manage.

Set the frequency from measurement, not from the calendar

Establish your baseline in litres per week in your own room, decide in advance the level at which you will act, and build the interval so a missed delivery still leaves headroom. In vapour phase storage the action level is higher than most people assume, because samples sit above the liquid and the gradient worsens as the level falls.

A rising consumption trend at unchanged workload is also the earliest practical sign that a vacuum is degrading, and it typically appears months before frost becomes visible on the outer shell.
