Five Questions to Settle Before You Order a Liquid Nitrogen Storage Tank
A cryogenic storage vessel is not another piece of laboratory equipment. It is where irreplaceable biological material may spend decades, and it is the only item in the laboratory whose failure cannot be undone by repeating the procedure. These are the questions worth settling before anyone raises a purchase order.
1. Have you decided your straw and vial format?
The specification chain runs from sample format outward. Format decides goblet and visotube compatibility, which decides cane and canister layout, which decides rack configuration and the neck diameter you need. The tank is the last decision in that sequence, not the first.
2. Has capacity been calculated against your formats?
Headline counts on a datasheet assume a format, and it is rarely the one you run. A goblet rated for a number of 0.25 ml straws holds considerably fewer high security straws. Ask for the calculation against your own formats and check that every format in the laboratory has a documented path to a specific canister position.
3. How often will the vessel actually be opened?
Neck diameter is the compromise between access and heat. Wide necks make retrieval faster and safer and raise consumption for the life of the vessel. The right answer follows access frequency, not sample count. A working store opened several times a day is a different specification from an archive opened monthly, even at the same inventory. Buying archive specification for a working store is the commonest invisible error here, because nothing announces it. The tank simply runs expensive, quietly, for a decade.
4. Vapour phase or liquid phase, and is the reason written down?
Liquid phase gives the most stable temperature and the longest hold time in a power failure. Vapour phase removes direct contact with the nitrogen and the cross contamination route that goes with it, the argument resting on the ASRM and SART observation in Fertility and Sterility (2020;114:486-491) that liquid nitrogen is not sterile. The trade is a temperature gradient up the vessel and far less tolerance if the liquid level falls. Neither is wrong. An undecided or inherited position is, because inspectors ask early.
5. Do you know what it costs to run, not just to buy?
Static evaporation rate, measured closed and undisturbed, drives running cost more than purchase price does. A larger vessel with a poor rate can cost more over ten years than a smaller one with a good rate. Treat the figure as a laboratory baseline rather than a promise about your store room, because every lid lift adds heat the measurement excluded. Then build your own baseline in litres per week and watch the trend. A steady rise at unchanged workload is a vacuum question, usually months before frost appears on the outer shell.
