Why Two IVF Labs Can Have the Same Protocol and Different Vitrification Results

 


 

Walk into two IVF laboratories using the same published vitrification protocol and you might find one reporting 94% post-thaw survival and another reporting 83%. Same technique, different outcomes. Here is what usually explains the gap.

The first variable is whether the laboratory uses a matched kit or sources components separately. Warming solutions from one brand used alongside a vitrification solution from another create osmotic conditions at thaw that differ from those the cells were dehydrated for. The result is cellular stress on rehydration.

The second is training rigour. The 60-90 second exposure window during the vitrification step is the most critical interval in the entire process. It cannot be approximated. Laboratories that treat it as a biological constraint -- rather than a rough guideline -- produce consistently higher survival rates.

The third is storage infrastructure. A vitrified embryo stored in a vessel with a wide neck, high traffic, and marginal LN2 levels is exposed to repeated vapour-phase temperature fluctuations. Over months or years, this degrades samples that survived the original freeze intact.
